With the beginning of a new school year now upon us, please take a moment to think of what the PTA has to offer and what you can offer the PTA.

GO GREEN WITH "DESPTA" YAHOO: We encourage all families with email to subscribe to our despta yahoo listserv group. It is a "green" and effective way to communicate. We limit postings to school and PTA business only. The site has an INACTIVE "reply-to-all" function, so you will not be plagued by group emails. You can subscribe at the bottom of this page.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The PTA is only as effective as our volunteers and every year you prove how committed Darnestown parents are by the hundreds of hours volunteers put into the school. Thanks for all your hard work last year and to those who have already signed up for this year, it is very much appreciated. We are in urgent need of volunteers to chair the Back to School Picnic; other openings are shown on the Volunteer Form on the Forms Page. If you are interested in helping out in a particular area you can either complete and return the form to school in care of the PTA or contact the appropriate Vice President directly.

THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL PICNIC: The picnic will be held at DES on Friday, September 24th. This fun event is free to all DES families. Bring along you own picnic or purchase food and drinks at the event.

READ-A-THON: Last year's read-a-thon was an overwhelming success. Our children put in hundreds of hours of reading, which was rewarded with some fantastic prizes on the way. The funds raised from this event allowed the PTA to increase support to the school. This year's read-a-thon will kick off with sponsorship starting on September 13th and timed reading on the 20th. Look out for instructions and sponsor forms.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM: The PTA will be supporting enrichment classes again this year. Group Piano and Foreign Languages (the FLES program) are now open for registration. Call Lisa MacPhee (301 990 3911) to sign up for Group Piano lessons held at school and Carrie D'Antona (301 963 1323) if your child is interested in learning Spanish, French, or Chinese.

We hope to see you all this year, involved as much or as little as your busy lives allow. Remember! We encourage you to contact us with any ideas, suggestions, or concerns.

Sincerely,

Pauline White, DES PTA President

Lisa Markiewicz, DES PTA Vice President
